How to Pick the Perfect Table – Part 1

Your home is a treasured place — you return home, after work and activities, to relax and refresh. A central place of refreshment in your home is your dining room, more specifically, your table.

At your dining room table, you gather with both friends and family to eat, to laugh, to share and connect.

Your table is a special place, unburdened by the stresses of life, characterized by the tantalizing scent of scrumptious food.

So, to help you find your perfect dining room table — the kind where good conversation and delicious food belongs — we talked one of the managers of Peaceful Valley Furniture to discover how to chose the ideal table.

First, you need to decide how many people you want to fit around the table on a daily basis.

Whether you’re looking for a small, comfy table — like our Kitchen Nook with Trestle Table — or a wide, roomy space to dine —like our Mission Deluxe Table— these tables will be the place you spend many delicious meals!

After you have decided the daily amount of chairs you desire, take a look at the max amount of guests you will have. Do you plan hosting large dinner parties or only need room for your parents on holidays? This answer will help you decide how many leaves you need — or if you need any at all!

Why Add Leaves?

Leaves will give you the opportunity to expand your table for more guests. Our leaves are also available with or without skirting. This addition does cost more but if you plan on using your leaves daily and your table already has skirting, leaves with skirting will complete the table’s look.

Don’t stress too much regarding this step. We will be happy to help in the future if you need more leaves than originally planned. We’re here to help!

Here’s how it works: Depending on the amount of people you plan to dine with daily and on holidays, we may recommend a farm table or extension table.

So…what’s the difference?

Farm Table vs. Extension Table

A farm table boasts a solid top without the extra gliding mechanics (that extension tables come with) which means it cannot extend with leaves.

This table is more economical and fits beautifully in small spaces. If you have a limited dining area, a farm style table may just be the one for you! Farm tables are available in different sizes so if you do have a big family but don’t need any additional leaves, this table could also work well for you.

An extension table fulfills its name perfectly: it extends! These tables are built with the proper mechanisms to add several leaves and expand the tables seating options.

The standard extension table measures about 42” wide by 60” long without any leaves; this size table will seat about 6 people comfortably.

With every two leaves added, two more seats are gained at the table. Each leave adds another 12” to the table length. For example, 12 people around the table would call for an additional six leaves.

Invest in the future: Keep in mind that our handcrafted tables last awhile. If a future with more children or plentiful entertaining seems plausible, it may be best to invest in an extension table now instead of waiting until later.

We recommend buying leaves based on the max amount of people you plan for. This will give you more options for long-term expansion.

With a comfortable, classy table, your dining experience will become less about food and more about connecting with your family and friends. Let your table become a place of refreshment, of peace — a place of belonging.
